The true meaning of “Games” is exact “competition”, but for “Olympic Games”, we have three values: Excellence, Friendship and Respect. In order to teach youths more about these three values, Singapore Youth Olympic Games will be not only one competition, but also lots of galore events.

There are two groups of events, “Pre-Games” and “During the Games”, now I will introduce them to you respectively.

Pre-Games

  • Friends@YOG: Learn more about the over 190 countries taking part in the Youth Olympic Games and make friends with the world.
  • Olympic Education Programme for Schools: Find out about the Olympic Movement and Youth Olympic Games.
  • Olympic Youth Camp: Youths from Singapore and various NOCs get together to build friendships and learn about Olypism.
  • International Sports Conference: A four-day “Youth in Physical Education & Sport” conference for educators, academics and young people.
  • Constituency Sports Week: Know more about sports. Better still, take up a new sport!
  • National Family Celebrations: An annual campaign that promotes family bonding and increase awareness of Singapore 2010 through sports activities.
  • Arts and Culture: A series of exciting festivals, performances and activities celebrating young talents.

During the Games

  • Athletes Education Programme: Learn through talks, dialogues, workshops, activity-based sessions, adventure, community-involvement projects and world-culture booths.
  • Spectator Programme: A fun programme of talks, games and interactive displays for you to participate in.
  • Art and Culture: Athletes, spectators and the public get to celebrate and be inspired by the spirit of Olympism through arts and cultural activities brought to them at the selected competition venues, the Youth Olympic Village, and throughout the city.
  • Singapore 2010 Websites: Fun and interactive digital media platforms.

With all these interesting activities and events, Singapore Youth Olympic Games will not only be competitions, but also be a big International project for education.

An officer from Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee invited Li Zitong and me to take a tour in Youth Olympic Games Learning Centre. We went there yesterday, got a good experience and took lots of photos.

The First Ever Youth Olympic Games

14 Jun 2009

Singapore_Youth_Olympics_2010Despite being a small country with only a land area of only 710 km2 and a multi-racial community of merely 4.8 million people, Singapore has edged past several first-world cities to win the bid of hosting the first ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Held from 14 to 26 August in 2010, over 3,500 athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 coming from 170 nations around the world will participate in this sporting event. The five candidate cities who have bid for the inaugural games and are shortlisted includes Athens, Bangkok, Moscow, Turin and last but not least Singapore. The main objective of the YOG is to bring together talented athletes from across the world with the aim of having them take part in high-level competitions and indicating to them the path to take to become real Olympians.

The idea for such an event was envisioned in 2001 by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge. On July 6, 2007, IOC members at the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City approved the creation of a youth version of the Olympic Games. Just like the world-class sporting event – the Summer/Winter Olympic Games, the YOG will be held every four years with the first Summer YOG to be held in Singapore in 2010 and the first Winter YOG to be held in Innsbruck, Austria in 2012. The Singapore YOG 2010 will feature 26 sports, including popular ones such as Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Sailing and Table Tennis. Read the rest of this entry »
